330. Braces didn’t celebrate Halloween until she became a Newsie. She was eight years old, and Crutchie and Jack convinced her to try to carve pumpkins and trick the other boys. Soon after, it became her favorite holiday; more than Easter, more than Christmas.

328. Every week or so, a young woman named Elsie comes around by the Lodging House to cook dinner for the boys. In the autumn, especially around the end of October and into November, she likes to dip apples in caramel for them.

329. Crutchie is obsessed with Mrs. Jacobs’ pumpkin pie. Every Halloween, he tries to convince her that she can make it for the Newsies (mainly himself), out of his jack-o-lantern. She declines, only to present Crutchie with a non-jack-o-lantern pie when he comes to their house.

327. The Newsies have a contest to see who can scare Davey the most, on Halloween. To this day, Les is the reigning champion.

326. The night before Halloween (Mischief night) every year, Mush gets up in the middle of the night to paint all of the boys’ faces with soot so they look like cats. No one has ever figured out who it was because Mush paints his own face as well. Last Halloween Spot spent the night in Manhattan and almost killed someone when he saw his reflection.
